OCTOBER MEETING
DATE: Saturday, October 21, 2023
TIME: 9:30 a.m.
WHERE: All-Purpose Room at McMillan Memorial Library, Wisconsin Rapids
PROGRAM: Wisconsin Institutional Records for Genealogy
Lee Grady, Senior Reference Archivist at the Wisconsin Historical Society will give a virtual presentation. Lee has spoken on a variety of topics related to the Historical Society's Library and Archives collections, including genealogy, local history, general archival research, maps, military records, state institutions (prisons, asylums, etc.), the Draper Collection, and the McCormick Collection. Lee is based at the Society's headquarters in Madison.
Institutional records are another class of collections that should be part of one’s genealogy research repertoire. Although most of your ancestors may not have spent time in an institution, almost every family tree has several that have. So they are worth your effort to research. Lee will present the state and local records that are held by the Wisconsin Historical Society including records for prisons, mental hospitals, poor houses, orphanages, and schools.
